About the Billion Dollar Challenge


Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world, is leading the way in setting the new gold standard in cancer care:
In April 2012, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (The PMCF) launched its BILLION DOLLAR CHALLENGE to support the revolution in cancer care for patients at The Princess Margaret, across Canada and beyond. 

Personalized Cancer Medicine is a multi-faceted, integrated approach involves finding the right treatment, for the right patient, at the right time. Our focus is to detect cancer earlier, diagnose with more precision, target treatment for each individual and support patients and their families through the cancer journey.

We are enormously grateful to all those who support our vision of Personalized Cancer Medicine. To create and deliver this new model of cancer care, leaders at The Princess Margaret are recruiting scientists, clinicians and other experts to further strengthen our position in such areas as epigenetics, clinical genomics, biobanking, computational biology, immunotherapy and pathology.

The PMCF’s challenge is to raise $500 million through philanthropy over a five-year period while our researchers are challenged to secure $500 million in research grants. We are pleased to report that as of October 2014, over $285 million has been secured in philanthropic support and over $291 million has been secured in grants by the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Now that we are past the halfway point in the Billion Dollar Challenge, we must work hard to maintain the momentum that is necessary to deliver Personalized Cancer Medicine.

The PMCF's Billion Dollar Challenge is the largest single fundraising campaign in the history of Canadian healthcare and will help maintain Princess Margaret Cancer Centre's position as one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world.
